Employment law, data protection law, and AI liability frameworks are all pointing in different directions — and most companies implementing these tools have not resolved the conflict, they have simply ignored it.

This is the recurring feature of the current AI rollout: move fast, clarify legality later. It works until it doesn't.

What to make of the week's signal

Three signals, one consistent theme: the money is flowing at a pace that outstrips the governance. Kendall is right that Britain cannot afford to sit on its hands. She is less right to treat every sceptical question as obstruction. Sequoia's $7bn confirms the direction of travel is locked in. Digital twins confirm that "AI at work" is already here, already messy, and largely unregulated in practice.

The real innovation gap in 2026 is not compute, capital, or models. It is institutional: who is building the frameworks that make these technologies accountable? Not to slow them — to make them durable. Britain's sovereign AI ambition will be measured not by how fast the £500m is deployed, but by whether the investment produces something that lasts beyond the next funding cycle.
